The Hunters, who are expected to provide the nucleus of PNG’s World Cup squad, will aim to complete an historic minor and major premiership double on 24 September after edging out Redcliffe 6-4 before a packed Oil Search National Football Stadium in Sunday’s qualifying final.

After attending the match in Port Moresby, Mr Hill congratulated the Hunters and their coach Michael Marum, who will have charge of the Kumuls during the World Cup.

He said the success of the Hunters would provide a boost for PNG’s prospects in the tournament, starting next month.

“I would like to congratulate Michal Marum and the PNG Hunters for qualifying for the grand final of the Queensland Cup for the first time,” Mr Hill said.

“The success of the PNG Hunters highlights the depth of talent the Kumuls will have to draw on for the Rugby League World Cup."

“For the Hunters to win the Queensland Cup minor premiership and be in the grand final is something the whole of Papua New Guinea should be proud of and can take confidence from as they look towards World Cup games at Oil Search National Football Stadium in Port Moresby.”

The Kumuls will host three pool matches against Wales, Ireland and the United States and anticipation is building in PNG for the World Cup after tickets went on sale last month.

Papua New Guinea is the only country in the world which has Rugby League as its national sport and RLWC2017 is the most anticipated sporting event PNG has ever hosted.

An Oil Search sponsored World Cup Trophy tour of PNG will commence tomorrow (11 September) until 13 October.

The RLWC2017 will be contested from 27 October to 2 December and features 14 nations playing 28 matches in 13 cities across Australia, New Zealand and in PNG.

As hosting partner of the RLWC2017, PNG will stage the PNG Kumuls' three pool games:
