Super League clubs boost England's World Cup hopes

England’s Rugby League World Cup hopes have received a massive boost after Wigan and Warrington created history by stunning more fancied rivals Cronulla and Brisbane in the World Club Series.

Just 24 hours after Warrington became the first English club to win a match since the concept was expanded in 2015 by beating Brisbane 27-18, Wigan thumped NRL premiers Cronulla 22-6 to leave the 21,010 strong crowd chanting: “Two-nil for Super League”.

The results were a welcome turnaround from the previous two years when NRL clubs have won all six World Club Series match and not only breathed life into the concept but raised hopes for England’s World Cup campaign at the end of the season.

"I am delighted that both Wigan and Warrington have demonstrated the high quality and skill level of rugby league in the northern hemisphere, particularly in a World Cup year," RFL chief executive Nigel Wood said.

"What is clear is that competitive international club rugby can showcase the very best in our sport to the world.

“The skill, passion and quality on show over the last two days have demonstrated that rugby league at its best is difficult to beat.”

Wales coach John Kear said the win would also boost confidence within his team and the Scotland camp ahead of the World Cup.

“What a great weekend for Super League. Wigan have taken it to the NRL champions and beaten them fairly and squarely. What a great afternoon for British rugby league.” Kear told BBC Radio.

The Wigan side, which led 10-0 at halftime and 16-0 until midway through the second half against the Sharks, featured 11 English players, one each from Wales, France and Australia and three New Zealanders.

Significantly, many of the stars for Warrington were also English, with Kevin Brown, Joe Westerman, Daryl Clark, Declan Patton, Andre Savelio and Ryan Atkins playing leading roles.

"The players have showed unbelievable character against the best in Australia,” Wigan coach Shaun Wane told Sky Sports after fulltime at DW Stadium on Sunday.

"Credit where credit's due, Warrington have done a great job and we've done okay today. It shows that we've got something to be proud of in Super League."

Wayne Bennett - English coach views World Club Challenge between Brisbane Broncos and Warrington Wolves

The performances of Brown at halfback for Warrington and Wigan five-eighth George Wiliams, in particular, would have ensured England coach Wayne Bennett returned to Brisbane in good spirits, despite the Broncos crushing defeat on Saturday night.

Bennett said last week that he would select 12 or 13 Super League players for the May 7 Test against Samoa in Sydney, where they will joined by the likes of James Graham, Gareth Widdop, Josh Hodgson and the Burgess brothers, Sam, George and Thomas.

Another Burgess, former Sydney Roosters and South Sydney Rabbitohs winger Joe Burgess (no relation), grabbed a hat-trick of tries in Wigan’s 22-6 win over the Sharks to push his claims for England selection, along with team-mates Sean O'Loughlin, John Bateman and Sam Tomkins.
